“My business is too small for a website”: 5 excuses that cost you customers

“We’re just a small business. Our customers know us. We don’t need a website.” We hear this every week, and it’s understandable. But small businesses are often the ones who lose the most when customers can’t find them online.

“My business is too small for a website”: 5 excuses that cost you customers
Quick answer

Most small businesses don’t need a big website, but they do need one place online they own, that shows up when customers search. The usual excuses (Instagram is enough, word of mouth, cost, no time, “we won’t rank anyway”) all lose you customers you never hear about. A simple one-page website with a WhatsApp button is often all you need to start.

Why this excuse feels true

When you run a small business, every ringgit and every hour counts. Your customers already WhatsApp you, a few regulars keep coming back, and a website sounds like something for “real companies” with offices and staff. So it goes to the bottom of the list.

The problem is that the customers you don’t get never tell you. They search, find a competitor who looks more established, and message them instead. Here are the five excuses we hear most, and what each one really costs.

5 excuses that are quietly costing you customers

1. “My customers already find me on Instagram”

Some do. But Instagram decides who sees your posts, and reach can drop overnight when the algorithm changes. Accounts can also be hacked or restricted. And plenty of customers, especially older ones and companies, don’t browse Instagram to find a supplier. They Google. Your social pages are rented space; a website is the one place online you own.

2. “Word of mouth is enough”

Word of mouth is the best kind of marketing, and it usually ends with a Google search. A friend says “try Kak Ana’s bakery”, and the first thing people do is search for it to see photos, prices and where you are. If they find nothing, or an old Facebook page, some of them stop there. We explain what people find in Clients Google your company name. What do they find?

3. “A website is too expensive”

It doesn’t have to be. A one-page landing page with your services, photos, reviews and a WhatsApp button costs less than many businesses spend on a month of ads. Try this sum: what is one new customer worth to you over a year? If a website brings in just one extra customer a month, it usually pays for itself quickly. Our website cost guide for Malaysia shows typical price ranges.

4. “I don’t have time to manage a website”

A small business website isn’t a blog you have to feed every week. A good one-page site can stay the same for months: your services, your prices, your area and your WhatsApp. If something needs changing, a care plan means someone else does it for you.

5. “Small businesses don’t show up on Google anyway”

Local searches are where small businesses win. Someone searching “kek hari jadi Rawang” or “aircond service Shah Alam” isn’t looking for a big brand. They want someone nearby they can trust. A Google Business Profile plus a simple website that says what you do and where you are gives you a real chance to appear.

When you really don’t need one yet

To be fair, a website isn’t always the first thing to spend on. You can probably wait if:

  • you’re still testing whether people will buy at all;
  • you already have more orders than you can handle; or
  • all your customers come from one closed community that already knows you.

Once you want new customers who don’t know you yet, especially from Google or ads, a website starts to matter.

What a small business website actually needs

  • One clear line saying what you do and for whom.
  • Your main services or products, with starting prices if you can.
  • Photos of real work, not stock images.
  • Reviews from real customers.
  • Your area and opening hours.
  • A WhatsApp button repeated down the page (here’s why WhatsApp beats a contact form).

That’s it. One page can do all of this. You can add more pages later, as we explain in landing page vs full website.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small business really need a website?

Not always on day one, but most do sooner than they think. If customers search for your service on Google, ask for your prices before buying, or come from ads, a simple website helps them trust you and contact you. A one-page site with a WhatsApp button is often enough to start.

Isn’t an Instagram or Facebook page enough?

It’s a good start, but you don’t control it. Reach depends on the algorithm, accounts can be restricted, and not every customer uses Instagram. A website is the one place online that you own, and it’s what Google shows when people search for your business.

How much does a simple website cost in Malaysia?

Market prices vary widely, from a few hundred ringgit for DIY templates to tens of thousands for large custom builds. At Shiok Digital, a landing page is RM850 one-off and a business website starts from RM1,850, with one fixed price agreed before work starts.

What should a one-page small business website include?

What you do, who it’s for, your main services or products with starting prices, photos of real work, reviews, your area and opening hours, and a clear WhatsApp button repeated down the page.
