How much does a website cost in Malaysia?
If you run a small business in KL or Selangor, you have probably been quoted anything from a few hundred ringgit to five figures for “a website”. Here is what drives the price, what you should expect to pay, and the costs people forget to ask about.
In Malaysia, a landing page typically costs around RM500–RM3,000, a small business website around RM1,500–RM8,000, and an online store from about RM2,500 upwards. On top of that, budget for yearly domain and hosting renewals.
Typical website prices in Malaysia
These are the rough ranges small businesses in the Klang Valley commonly get quoted. The spread is wide because “a website” can mean very different things.
| Type of website | Typical price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page (1 page) | RM500 – RM3,000 | A launch, a promotion, a single service, or collecting WhatsApp enquiries |
| Small business website (5–10 pages) | RM1,500 – RM8,000 | Most SMEs: about, services, gallery, contact |
| E-commerce / online store | RM2,500 – RM20,000+ | Selling products online with payments and delivery |
| Custom corporate site or web app | RM15,000+ | Large companies, portals, booking systems, custom features |
Ranges are a general guide, not a quote. Prices vary with scope, content and who builds the site.
What affects the price
1. Number of pages
Every page has to be designed, written and tested. A one-page landing page is the cheapest option; a 20-page site with service pages for every location costs much more.
2. Template or custom design
A lightly customised template is quicker to build. A design made from scratch for your brand takes longer, but it helps you stand out from competitors using the same theme.
3. Content: who writes and who takes the photos
This is the hidden time sink. If you already have your text, logo and photos, the project moves faster and costs less. If the designer has to write copy or source images, expect that to be added to the quote.
4. Features
Online payment, booking calendars, member logins, multiple languages (English and Bahasa Melayu, for example) and integrations with other systems all add work. A WhatsApp button and a simple enquiry form, on the other hand, are cheap and very effective in Malaysia.
5. Who builds it
A freelancer, a small studio and a large agency will quote very differently for the same brief, mainly because of overheads, process and how much hand-holding is included.
Yearly running costs
The build is a one-off cost, but a website also has ongoing costs. Make sure you know who pays for these and who owns the accounts.
| Item | What it is | Typical yearly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | Your address, e.g. yourbusiness.com or .com.my | Roughly RM50 – RM150 |
| Hosting | The server your website lives on | Roughly RM150 – RM600 for a small business site |
| SSL certificate | The padlock (https) in the browser | Often free with your hosting |
| Maintenance | Updates, backups, small changes | Optional; monthly plans or pay per change |
| Website builder plan | If you use Wix, Shopify, etc. | A monthly subscription instead of hosting |
Check current prices with your domain and hosting provider; they change and vary by plan.
Freelancer, agency or DIY?
| Option | Pros | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| DIY website builder | Lowest upfront cost, quick to start | Monthly fees, your own time, generic look |
| Freelancer | Affordable, flexible, direct contact | Check their portfolio and that they will be reachable after launch |
| Small studio | Experienced team, fair prices, clear process | Agree the scope and the fixed price in writing |
| Large agency | Strategy, big teams, complex projects | Highest cost; often more than an SME needs |
Questions to ask before you pay
- Is this a fixed price? Or will I be billed by the hour if things change?
- What exactly is included? Number of pages, rounds of changes, copywriting, photos.
- Are domain and hosting included? For how long, and what does renewal cost?
- Who owns the website and the domain? Make sure the domain is registered in your name.
- Will it work well on phones? Most of your visitors will be on mobile.
- Can I update it myself? Or does every change cost extra?
- What happens after launch? Who do I call if something breaks?
How to keep the cost down
- Start with a landing page. One good page with a WhatsApp button can bring in enquiries now. Add more pages later as the business grows.
- Prepare your content first. Have your logo, photos, services and prices ready before the project starts.
- Keep features simple. A WhatsApp button often does the job of a complex booking system for a small business.
- Ask for a fixed price. It protects your budget and forces a clear scope.
- Look at real past work. A portfolio of live websites tells you more than a low price does.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a basic website cost in Malaysia?
A simple one-page landing page usually costs from around RM500 to RM3,000. A small business website with 5 to 10 pages is typically RM1,500 to RM8,000, depending on who builds it and how much custom design and content is involved.
Are there yearly costs after the website is built?
Yes. Every website needs a domain name and hosting, which are renewed yearly. Many owners also pay for maintenance or updates. Ask for these costs in writing before you start so there are no surprises.
Is it cheaper to build a website myself?
Website builders such as Wix or Shopify cost less upfront, but you pay a monthly subscription and spend your own time on design, writing and setup. If your time is better spent running the business, a fixed-price package from a designer often works out better value.
